In the beginning I wasn’t looking for them, and flowers just kept coming into my life. I fell into doing floral design during a working holiday visa in Australia. And again, it became part of my job to forage and design floral pieces at a high-end resort in the Great Bear Rainforest. I quickly fell in love and started religiously following flower farmers on social media and you tubing tutorial videos. I got a position at a top floral shop in my hometown by auditioning my skills. I did the grunt work, listened, watched and got to design. I learned I prefer the lush local floral approach and I struggled with the shop’s environmental footprint. I felt I wasn’t following my path at the shop. So after a year of working at a floral shop I quit. I sourced out local flower farmers and started doing my own events and collaborating with locals to create beautiful photo shoots. I designed the idea behind my logo, did my first wedding on my own and made a website, and in September 2016 I embarked making my dreams reality, and called it Powell Floral Design.
The firsts for anything is always the best. This was Powell ‘s first Christmas, and boy was it festive! I got right into the Christmas spirit in the beginning of November by connecting with a beautiful local Sannich vineyard. They allowed me to forage grape vine that that had been harvested and would have been otherwise cut down and burned. After a few awkward trials I figured out a way bend the vine into a somewhat perfectly imperfect circle in a way was super tough and not coming apart. Hanging up to dry- hydrangeas, eucalyptus, statice, lavender, eryngium, and spray roses. With rose hips, variegated holy, dried orange slices, pinecones of all sizes and all things coniferous; it started to feel festive at Powell’s home studio.
One December day on my living room floor I made some buntings from recycled linen. I used rose gold spray paint and silver sparkles. I was invited to help style and be a vendor at Holiday Local Party at Heartwood and Co, which is a very hip local Victoria beauty and hair boutique. The party was a complete hit, and I felt bashful to be in the presence a group of local lady bosses: Friends and Neighbours, Lacey Janette, Alexis Kastner, and Ellie short. Being that this was also my first Christmas market, I was pretty happy to sell most of my pieces I brought.
Now it’s the New Year and I start back at school in just a few days. I am trying to quickly prepare myself and get organized by completing all my wedding quotes, organizing photos, and clean up the home base. Below are some of my favorite photos I came across that are my favorite memories form 2016. Thank you for all that were apart of my amazing ride from a-z this year! It was a super transformational for me and I can’t believe how lucky I am to be basically living out my dreams.
From the bottom of my deepest heart of hearts: I wish all of you joy, beauty, love, and learning for this New Year to come!
